Progress Report– And STORM BORN

As I kind of assumed, there hasn't been much to report lately. I've been working away at the third Areios Brothers novel to bide my time, and while it's been a lot of fun, I figured today would be the day to talk a little bit about the standalone novel I'm doing for NaNoWriMo, which starts in a couple weeks (holy crap!).

Some of you might have heard the story behind Path of the Horseman's origin– how I originally planned and intended to write an entirely different novel, but wasn't as in love with it as I thought. Then I see a writing prompt on Pinterest, and a new idea that I can't resist is born. I promised myself I wouldn't do that again this year... And then I saw this...

Yup. See how I couldn't ignore this? Why I never wanted to? I tried, though. I didn't want to stray from my original idea because I'd already spent a great deal of time and effort planning and creating character backgrounds, thinking about plot twists and scenes and...

I just kept thinking: Storm children falling from the sky, running around destroying things and devouring anything alive. A town preparing for the first storm in a century.

Like Path of the Horseman, I couldn't let it go. I found myself wondering about these mysterious children– the Stormkind– and what kind of impact this would have in today's society. About the people who are supposed to draw the Storm Born back, to control the frequency of their attacks and keep them from ravaging the world in a single powerful storm.

Pretty soon, I was writing up a new plot, building a new world, creating my own mythology, writing new characters, and thinking about what to do with all the powers I could give them.

As of right now, I have a pretty solid storyline. I might change the ending– I'm a seat-of-the-pants-writer, so it happens– but for the most part the story will stay the same. I haven't written up the official synopsis yet, but here's what I have in store:

A shy young woman named Ava is caught in the middle of a record-breaking Centennial Storm. In the storm, she's struck by a powerful force and rendered unconscious. She wakes up without serious injury, but as she continues to find her way through a newly shattered world, Ava realizes that something is different. That she is different. After a series of wild and destructive events, Ava finds herself in the care of a mysterious man named Hadrian– a Guardian of the Stormkind assigned to protect her against an enemy faction. Ava is soon swept up in a whirlwind of responsibility and danger, and must find the courage always so elusive to her if she hopes to survive...

Like I said, it's a rough synopsis. I've got a little toying with the plot to do, but I think this will be a lot of fun. I can't wait to get started and see what I can do with the story. It's going to be wild!
